Odyssey
The meek shall inherit the Earth.
But not Dominaria.
Take a 100-year leap forward to a harsh Dominaria where deadly pit fighting is the new order of things. And if you want to make it through another day, you better begin with an Odyssey set of cards.
Odyssey was released in 2001 and is the first set in the Odyssey block. Odyssey introduced us to new mechanics including Threshold and Flashback. There were new and different tribes in this set such as Barbarians, Birds, Centaurs, Cephalids, Druids, Dwarves and Insects. The set also featured cards that generated tokens. There are 4 new protection abilities: Protection from All colors, Protection from Creatures, Protection from Enchantments, and Protection from instant spells and sorcery spells. Notable cards included Psychatog, Werebear, Entomb, and Upheaval.
Torment
They twist and torture reality into the dark shape of horror. This is the dark, blackened reality of Torment. Known during development as "the black set", the Torment expansion introduces new madness and nightmare mechanics, which are designed to drive your opponents insane. The cards in Torment center around the environment of the Cabal's Dementia Summoners, and specifically Chainer with his deadly nightmare horrors.
Torment was released in 2002 and is the second set in the Odyssey block. Torment was unusual in its imbalance of colors. Torment heavily featured black cards and black ally colored cards (blue and red). Torment continued with the mechanics of Flashback and Threshold but also introduced Madness and Nightmares. There were four Tainted Lands that all tapped for at least one swamp and another color, as well as a colorless mana. Notable cards include Ichorid, Mutilate, Circular Logic and Basking Rootwalla.
Judgment
In Judgment, The powerful forces of white and green ascend to counter the black dominance of the Torment expansion. The Mirari has changed hands and Kamahl, who has been instructed to talk to the Nantuko and learn the ways of the druids, now wields the vastly powerful artifact.
Judgment was released in May of 2002 and is the final set in the Odyssey block. Making up for the black theme of Torment, Judgment balances out the set by heavily focusing on white and green cards. Judgment continues with the blocks mechanics of Threshold and Flashback and also introduces us to a graveyard theme, having players use their graveyard as a resource. Incarnation was a mechanic which had creatures who had abilities that were only activated when placed in the graveyard. Notable cards include Genesis, Burning Wish, and Worldgorger Dragon.
