Onslaught
The Battle for the Mirari, a mysterious and powerful artifact, has ended. The mighty barbarian Kamahl has been embraced by the Krosan Forest and claims the Mirari in its name - but his trials aren't over yet. The Cabal still holds the continent of Otaria firmly in its merciless grip, and fearsome new threats have appeared along with a new enemy - Ixidor the master illusionist.
Onslaught was released in September of 2002. Onslaught introduced us to the mechanics of Morph and Fear and reintroduced us to Cycling. The over all theme was a focus on the various tribes associated with the creature type cards. The featured creature types in Onlsaught are Dwarf, Centaur, Beasts, Birds, Clerics, Elves, Goblins, Soldiers, Wizards, and Zombies. There were also tribal lands, which were uncommons, that helped to enhance or activate an ability from one of the major tribes seen in Onslaught. Notable cards included Exalted Angel, Goblin Piledriver, Goblin Sharpshooter, Patriarch's Bidding.
Legions
The illusionist Ixidor has been banished to a mystic imprisonment and the weary Kamahl retreats into the Krosan Forest where the magic of the Mirari continues to intensify and mutate all life on Otaria. In the midst of this turmoil, the stage is set for an epic confrontation between Phage and Akroma who will stop at nothing to destroy each other once and for all. Their personal conflict has gone beyond hatred as they both draw armies to their sides, some with promises of glory, and others with false promises of hope.
Legions was released in 2003 and is the second set in the Onslaught block. Legions is the only set so far that features only creature cards, though some of the creatures mimicked enchantments in their abilities or had morph triggers that worked like spells. Legions also reintroduced us Slivers. Popular mechanics included Amplify, Provoke and Double Strike. Double Strike was a mechanic developed by a fan of the game during the “You Make the Card” Promotion. Notable cards are Akroma, Angel of Wrath, White Knight, Krosan Cloudscraper and Timberwatch Elf.
Scourge
Kamahl knows he has to act. The conflict between Phage and Akroma threatens to consume all of Otaria. All armies have converged and are ready for war. Breaking his deep meditation in the Krosan forest, Kamahl races to the scene of battle between his fallen sister and the arcane angel. Just as the two women are about to trade blows, Kamahl strikes, cutting both women with a single blow to end the feud, but ancient, unseen forces intervene and fuse the two women into an immensely powerful being: Karona.
Scourge is the third set released in the Onslaught block and came out in 2003. This set continues with the tribal theme but also focuses on cards with high converted mana costs and dragons, which did not see many cards in Onslaught. Scourge introduced us to Landcycling, or Typecycling. Scourge also had a number of cards with high converted mana costs such as Reward the Faithful and Cabal Conditioning which made the theme “Cost Matters” a popular mechanic. Notable cards included Stifle, Brain Freeze, Decree of Justice, Mind’s Desire, and Tendrils of Agony.
